Overcome Baby Sleeping Problems
While a new baby is an exciting addition to a household not all aspects of parenting are as appealing. Getting a new baby to learn to
sleep through the nights is one of them. Fortunately it has been proven that babies learn to sleep through the night more easily when they follow
a healthy sleep routine.
While many parents naturally feel that they should not interfere with their child’s sleep habits, sometimes it is necessary to intervene in
order to create healthy life-long habits. With a newborn it is especially tempting to let their baby dictate when and where she will sleep, but
in the long run the baby must learn to sleep on her own at times that suit the family’s nighttime routine.
There are many aspects to baby sleeping problems. The first and most obvious is to follow a regular pattern of activities before bedtime each
night. Many parents typically will feed and change their baby, then play gently with them until they become sleepy. It is important to put your
baby into bed while she is still awake and aware, but tired and ready for sleep. This will teach her to fall asleep on her own without having a
parent in the room with her at all times.
Another equally important thing is to modify your baby’s daytime sleep pattern. While newborns will sleep a great deal at first you should
work to discourage excessive napping during the day. This does not necessarily mean actively keeping the child awake when she should be asleep.
Instead you can use subtle methods to encourage your baby to sleep less deeply and to awaken more quickly.
One way to do this is to keep the lights on while your baby sleep, or if it is a bright day let the baby sleep near a window where the sun
will light the room. Another idea is to keep the noise level in the house active and not be afraid to do chores that have the potential to awaken
the child.
If your baby likes to sleep late in the mornings it is best to wake her up when your family begins the day. Turn on the lights, be active
around her and if necessary pick her up and change her diaper to rouse her.
While you wouldn’t want to interfere too much with your baby’s sleep patterns subtly adjusting her habits will help her learn to adjust to
your family’s routines. By optimizing the environment for times you want you baby to sleep, and making it difficult for her to sleep as long or
deeply at times she should be awake you will help your baby learn to adjust her own sleep rhythms.
Eventually you will find that your baby has shifted to a regular pattern of one or two daytime naps and will sleep through the night. She will
be better rested and more actively involved during her wakeful periods through the day.
