Starting the Path to a Good Night’s Sleep

For most new parents one of the most difficult things is the lack of sleep caused by the frequent awakenings of a newborn baby. Because of this it is important to start teaching good sleep habits as soon as your baby arrives home.

There are many tips and tricks out there to help parents find a good bedtime routine for their new baby. All babies are different and some techniques will work better than others. If you don’t fell that one method is working, don’t be afraid to move on to a different one. Usually a parent has the best instinct as to their individual baby’s needs, so don’t be afraid to follow that instinct and try what you feel will work best.

Babies naturally want to sleep with their mother. She has been with them since they were conceived and is their greatest comfort. On the other hand, it is essential for your own rest and comfort that your baby learns to sleep on his own. Not only should he learn to fall asleep on his own, but he should also learn that he is able to return to sleep when awakening at night without needing someone there beside him.

Probably the most important step in teaching your baby to sleep at night is to create a regular bedtime routine. By following this routine in a consistent fashion you will teach you baby that these specific activities mean it is time to get ready to sleep.

For example, you may find the best routine involved giving you baby a bath, feeding him, then reading a story before bed. If you do this every night before putting him down to sleep he will soon begin to drowse off once the story begins.

Consistency is key. If you were to perhaps skip the bath the odd night you would confuse your baby and he would not understand that bedtime was soon to follow. He might wonder if it would be playtime after the story. This is because babies have a very limited range of experience and take time to understand variability in routine.

It is important that whatever your bedtime routine is, it involves a great deal of parent-time. Babies and young children crave parental attention and if they feel that they have not gotten enough will seek ways to gain extra attention at the least convenient times. This includes lengthy rituals of waking and requiring attention after going to bed. In order to avoid this annoying bedtime habit start early with a routine that involves lots of one-on-one time with your baby.

When teaching your baby that nighttime is sleep time, be consistent and give him all the attention he needs. He will thank you for it in the long run, and likewise you will thank yourself as you get a better night’s sleep.
